LiFi Helps Save the World from Spectrum Crunch

We can’t imagine life without internet connectivity. Both cellular and WiFi technologies utilize radio frequencies to transmit data to devices like phones and laptops. The radio spectrum, however, is a finite resource.

Radio waves can pass through walls, so people outside your WiFi network can intercept them. The opposite happens with light.

Digital signals carried by light are way faster than those transmitted via radio waves used in WiFi connections.

LiFi uses a LED light bulb as a medium to transmit data to and from a device. It’s no secrete that LED light bulbs are energy-efficient.

Connection to the internet is available as long as there’s a LED light source. In the future, it’ll be possible to use street and building lights to go online and stay connected.

V2X communication

he main outdoor OCC applications are in smart cities for V2V, V2X, and underwater and seaside communications.OCC is predominantly utilized in outdoor schemes to solve severe light interference and noise, such as sunlight, thus improving the signal to noise and interference ratio.

The OCC-based IPS offers a number of advantages including high positioning accuracy (i.e., less than centimeters), license-free, no RF electromagnetic interference and low cost.The OCC based positioning scheme is also deemed more practical since it can be implemented directly on the smartphones’ front cameras.

Augmented Reality / Virtual reality

OCC is used in machine learning to solve a range of problems in various applications such as data mining, pattern recognition, medical imaging, artificial intelligence, etc. In addition, it is utilized to increase the accuracy of single-camera positioning by training the variants of pitch, roll, and yaw at the coordinate of the camera.

Data sharing

Indoor OCC schemes are the most prominent, as the majority of the intended applications among the use cases listed in the standardization are for indoor environments data collection. The use cases for indoor schemes include digital signage exhibition or store services and in-flight services A combined version of these use cases is proposed for a more complex system such as smart factories, smart offices and data sharing in these environments.

Motion detection and recognition

The motion detection works in conjunction with the OCC can further be enhanced using a highly accurate NN-based motion detection scheme in smart homes and offices.

Financial transactions

OCC offers the possibility of transferring a significant amount of data by simply displaying it on the screen of a smart device. A data rate of 112.5 Kbps is achieved with only single-color modulation. OCC has the potential of delivering a higher data rate of ~300 Kbps. Despite its limited transmission distance of 15 cm, OCC is preferable over NFC for financial transactions.
